Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Childe Hassam exhibited an early passion for art, working in a wood engraver's shop instead of pursuing college. His work soon graced various magazines during the heyday of American illustration. Evening nude drawings at the Boston Arts Club and weekend landscape painting sessions with local artists supplemented his learning. In 1883, Hassam spent a year in Europe, followed by a three-year stay in Paris with his wife, Kathleen Maude Doane. There, he earned a living through magazine illustrations and painting, sending works back to dealers. His early Paris street scenes are considered among his finest. Hassam's painting evolved under the influence of impressionism, focusing on light and color. His landscapes, coastal scenes, and white church paintings exemplify this. He received early recognition, including a bronze medal at the Paris Exposition in 1889 and a silver medal at Munich in 1892. Despite his debt to French impressionists, Hassam insisted that the modern painting movement was founded on John Constable, William Turner, and Richard Bonington. His work, however, was more derivative of Claude Monet. Hassam continued painting figures, especially after moving to New York in 1889, with his flag series influenced by Édouard Manet. A member of 'The Ten' and regular exhibitor at prestigious events, Hassam was known for his lively, cheerful personality. He passed away in East Hampton, Long Island, in 1935, bequeathing his work to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
